SDDF is involved in several humanitarian programs in different sectors e.g. Education, Health & Hygiene, Access to Justice, Environment, Water & Sanitation, Poverty Alleviation, Women Rights, Child Protection, Psychosocial Support, etc. Following are the brief outlines of our programs/projects:

 

 

Education

 

Ongoing Programs / Projects

 

Project Title:

Establishing and running 33 Basic Education Community Schools

Funded by:

National Education Foundation, Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan.

Time Frame:

July 2003 till now

Target Location:

District Abbottabad: Villages Rajoia, Daga Mera, Sultan Pur, Jarral, Tangar, Charri, Soban Gali, Jabbi, Jabri, Sora Dara, Kothiala, Muslim Abad, Thati Syedian, Panj Garaian, Karach, Dobathar, Riala, Gora Baz Garan, Nara Havelian

District Mansehra: Villages Jageer, Banda Balola, Bisian, Podina Bela, Garlat, Hassa, Baliani, Balakot

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 1000 children

Indirect: Families of 1000 children and communities in 33 villages

Main Objective:

to impart primary education through non formal schools

 Major Activities:

-  establishing and running non formal education schools

-  capacity building and supervision of teachers

-  monitoring of school activities

-  provision of books and relevant material

-  conducting tests and exams

-  organizing co & extra curricular activities

-  formation of village education committees

-  formation of parent teacher associations

Outcome/Impact:

The students studying in the non formal schools are very vulnerable / poor. They cannot afford studying in paid schools. Some of them are over aged or dropped out from other schools.  The non formal schools provide them with opportunities to continue their studies. The schools of the project are an additional educational service within the communities. These schools serve a very important role in gratifying the Government's vision to increase the levels of literacy.

Accomplished Programs / Projects

 

Project Title:

Adult Literacy Program

Funded by:

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD)

Time Frame:

June 2004 - December 2005

Target Location:

District Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 1000 individuals (males and females) got non formal education through 30 Adult Literacy Centers in District Abbottabad. 

Main Objectives:

to provide non formal basic education to adult males and females through 30 Adult Literacy Centers

Major Activities:

- establishing 30 Adult Literacy Centers

- Identifying and Capacity Building of Non Formal Teachers

- Providing basic facilities in the Adult Literacy Centers e.g. reading and writing material

- Monitoring and assessment of educational activities.

Outcome/Impact:

The project contributed in increasing adult literacy rate by educating 1000 adult males and females.

 

 

 

 

Women Empowerment

Project Title:

Women Skill Development Institute

Funded by:

Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM)

Time Frame:

January 2005 till now

Target Location:

Mera Nawan Shehr, Abbottabad.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 120 women so far got vocational training in different skills and completed computer literacy courses

Indirect: The project is indirectly helpful in uplifting the socioeconomic status of the families of the trained women

Main Objective:

to uplift the vulnerable women of Abbottabad in socioeconomic perspectives

 Major Activities:

1. to provide vocational training to the enrolled women in almost 30 different skills e.g.

       - cutting

       - sewing

       - knitting

       - Machine and Hand Embroidery

       - Lamp Shade Making

       - Hand Made Toys

       - Glass Painting

       - Fabric Painting

       - Leather Work, etc.

       - Computer Literacy Course

2. to establish a Display Center at a central location in Abbottabad City.

Outcome/Impact:

120 women belonging to extremely poor families of Abbottabad are being given sufficient vocational training which enables them to earn food for their families.

Project Title:

Industrial Training Center for women

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation.

Time Frame:

March 2006 till now

Target Location:

Sultan Pur, Havelian, District Abbottabad, Paksitan.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 120 women got industrial training in different vocational skills so far

Indirect: The families of 100 women were benefited in their socioeconomic growth.

Main Objectives:

- to promote women's home/cottage industries i.e. Embroidery and other handicrafts.

- to encourage women folk of the remote area to earn their livelihood by their own which will contribute in their per capita income

- to introduce new female workers in this field and give new information about handicraft in related field

 Major Activities:

Health & Hygiene

Project Title:

Health Education Program / Primary Health Care

Funded by:

Trust for Volunteer Organizations (TVO) & European Commission

Time Frame:

July 2002 - June 2003

Target Location:

UC Kothiala, District Abbottabad, NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 1192 women got training in Primary Health Care

Indirect: The inhabitants of 53 villages of UC Kothiala were benefited by the project 

Main Objectives:

Provide the health education facility for Preventive Health Care and linkages with Government Health

Services to 1192 females of 53 villages in duration of one year of Union Council Khatiala, Tehsil and District

Abbottabad.

 Major Activities:

-  to conduct a need assessment survey

- to form Village Health Committee in each of 53 villages

- to prepare Health Education Guide in Urdu language (a training manual)

- to train 5 Master trainers who could further train 1192 women of 53 villages

- to monitor and supervise trainings organized by the Master Trainers

Outcome/Impact:

Women residing in 53 villages were sensitized on basic Health & Hygiene issues. They incorporated the trainings into their domestic and social lives.

Project Title:

Lady Health Workers' Training on Birth Registration

Funded by:

Plan Pakistan

Time Frame:

February-April 2003

Target Location:

District Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: 1000 Lady Health Workers got training on Birth Registration

Indirect: Women coming to 32 Basic Health Units in District Abbottabad benefited by the project.

Main Objectives:

to train 1000 Lady Health Workers on Birth Registration

Major Activities:

to organize 32 training workshops for 1000 Lady Health Workers on the following topics:

- Child Rights and CRC

- Birth Registration in Pakistan

- Islamic background about Birth Registration

- Infrastructure of Birth Registration in Pakistan

- Justification and scope of Birth Registration

- Outcome and Impact of Birth Registration

- The Role of LHVs in Birth Registration

- Documentation and Procedures involved in Birth Registration

Outcome/Impact:

1000 Lady Health Workers were fully trained in all the theoretical and practical aspects of Birth Registration. The project helped at least 32 communities in improving their health related standards of living.

Child Protection

Project Title:

Psychosocial Uplift of Orphans 

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation & SUKOON

Time Frame:

January 2007 till now

Target Location:

Different Institutions in NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

25 institutionalized male orphans

300 female orphans

Main Objective:

1. To provide adequate psychosocial support to the orphans

1.   2. To improve the psychosocial condition of the orphans:

a.           -   to provide recreational activities to orphans

b.           -   to do psychological assessment and analysis to provide appropriate psychological counseling

                  and artificial love

c.            -   to sensitize the children on health and hygiene issues

d.   3. To raise awareness on Child Rights within the orphanage

              - to organize training workshops for the orphans and the orphanage staff

              - to organize monthly focus group discussions with the orphans

 Major Activities:

- to administer psychological tests to assess the psychological problems of the orphans

- to provide the orphans with psychological counseling and psychotherapy

- to provide recreational activities to the orphans by organizing different games and special Fun Fairs

- to organize Mental Health once a month within the orphanage

- to organize focus group discussions with the orphans to discuss Health & Hygiene related issues

- to organize training workshops on Child Rights for the orphans and the orphanage staff

Outcome/Impact:

The orphans feel mentally energized and have lesser psychological problems. They are motivated to learn properly and to achieve maximum possible success in their lives.

Project Title:

Psychotherapeutic Rehabilitation Center

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation & SUKOON

Time Frame:

February 2009 till now

Target Location:

Abbottabad Orphange, Abbottabad, NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Ongoing clients

Main Objective:

To provide psychotherapeutic correction and rehabilitation to:

  • Mentally Retarded children

  • Special Children

  • Children with learning disabilities

  • Children having mental disorders

  • Child survivals of sexual abuse

  • Children involved in substance abuse / drugs

  • Street Children

 Major Activities:

The enrolled children are provided with psychotherapeutic correction and rehabilitation in day care settings. They undergo through a variety of psychotherapeutic plans and every child is dealt with an individual rehabilitation plan while involving his/her family members.

Outcome/Impact:

This project is extremely beneficial in correcting the child focused psychosocial problems. Sukoon and SDDF have provided a professionally helpful layout to those families whose children are not considered normal in any aspect.

Project Title:

NGO Resource Center, Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Funded by:

Time Frame:

1995 till now

Target Location:

NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Direct: The social / developmental organizations of NWFP, Pakistan.

Indirect: General Population of NWFP, Pakistan.

Goal:

Contribute to the process of democratization by promoting sustainable development in all spheres of social and political life and through the establishment of mechanisms and structures of civil society.

 

Main Objectives:

  1.     To build an effective NGO Community in Pakistan.

  2.     To enhance the performance of non-profit sector by improving its technical and managerial capacity and effectiveness

  3.     To serve as a credible centre of knowledge, information and experience for and about the non-profit sector     

  4.     To bridge the gap among NGOs, CBOs, CCBs, Donors and the Government.

  5.     To assist individuals in the formation and registration of organizations / firms / companies / societies, etc.

Information Services

The NGORC intends to disseminate and share relevant information to other stakeholders through different means such as Resource Centre Website, Library & Online Resources, Annual NGO Directory, Fortnightly Email Newsletter, Quarterly News Magazine, Thematic Information Fairs, etc.

 

Working Groups

NGORC facilitates networking among and between NGOs, Community Based Organizations, government institutions and donor agencies. Basic aim of networking is to create a sense of solidarity within the NGO and the Community Based Organizations; to create linkages between the NGO sector, Community Based Organizations, and building partnership between NGOs, Government and Donor Agencies.

A range of sectoral and technical working groups are intended to be established. Some examples of the working groups could be:

  • Administrators Working Group

  • Program Support Staff’s Working Group

  • Disaster Management Working Group

  • Disability Working Group

  • Ethnic Minorities Working Group

  • HIV/AIDS Technical Working Group

  • Development Information Working Group

  • Poverty Policy Learning Group

  • Small and Medium Enterprise Forum

  • Sustainable Agriculture & Natural Resource Management Working Group

  • Water Supply and Sanitation Working Group

  • Child Protection Working Group; and more groups as desired by the stakeholders.

Research and Documentation:

The NGORC will also carry out research, analysis and documentation, the result of which will be disseminated to the NGO community, donors and policy makers.

 

Facilitation in the Development and Registration of Organizations:

The SDDF, since long, is involved in facilitating individuals having aptitudes for social work to develop and register NGOs, CBOs, CCBs, Trusts, companies, Firms, etc.

 

Outcome/Impact:

The NGO Resource Center is a focal point to share ideas relevant to social development. It will go a long way in strengthening social / development sector in the country.

 

 

 

Environment

Project Title:

Plantation Campaign

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation

Time Frame:

1997 till now

Target Location:

District Abbottabad, NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Inhabitants of District Abbottabad

Main Objectives:

to improve the environmental health of the district by frequent plantation

 Major Activities:

-  to mobilize communities on the importance of plantation

- to plant 5000 plants per annum

- to supervise the maintenance of plants by SDDF's Village Coordinators

Outcome/Impact:

This project is an ongoing contribution to the environmental health of the district and contributes in the overall environmental conditions of the country.

 

 

 

Poverty Alleviation

Project Title:

Human Resources Development Program

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation and Sukoon

Time Frame:

January 2009 till now

Target Location:

Hazara Division, NWFP, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

The unemployed skilled or educated population of Hazara Division, NWFP, Pakistan.

Main Objectives:

to facilitate the unemployed in professional settlements

 Major Activities:

-  to develop a database of unemployed workers

- to facilitate the registered workers in projecting their competencies and expertise in a professional fashion. This includes training workshops for resume writing, interviews, job hunting techniques, etc.

- to provide the registered workers with career counseling and vocational guidance

- to bridge up the gap between potential workers and the employers through variety of means e.g. telephonic correspondence, quarterly news bulletins, job fairs, etc.

Outcome/Impact:

This project is an ongoing contribution in alleviating poverty and combating joblessness. It also intends to reduce the levels of stress and frustration among the jobless individuals.

Emergency Relief

Project Title:

NFI Distribution to the Earthquake affected populations of District Abbottabad & Manshra, Pakistan.

Funded by:

Sohni Dharti Development Foundation in collaboration with Individual philanthropists and partner organizations

Time Frame:

October 2005 till March 2006

Target Location:

Different villages in Districts Abbottabad and Manshera, Pakistan.

Beneficiaries:

Almost 10000 families affected by the historic earthquake of Pakistan

Main Objectives / activities:

to provide basic survival necessities to the most vulnerable affected of the earthquake. The NFIs distributed included:

  • Tents

  • Blankets

  • Floor Sheets

  • Plastic Sheets

  • Warm Clothes / Jackets

  • Mattresses

  • Dry Food and other commodities

  • Medicine

Outcome/Impact:

The project helped out the most vulnerably earthquake affected families in providing them with basic life necessities.
